DECODE SYMPOSIUM 2019
Our Data, Our Future: Radical Tech for a Democratic Digital Society
DECODE is an ambitious EU project with 14 high level partners that aims to advance the cause of decentralised, rights-preserving and privacy-enhancing digital infrastructures that put individuals in control of their data while enabling them to share it for the common good. DECODE focuses
its research and development effort on novel notions of digital sovereignty and data commons, aspiring to see them implemented in new EU policies.
The theme of the 2019 DECODE Symposium is Our Data, Our Future: Radical Tech for a Democratic Digital Society. It will focus on constructing viable democratic alternatives to the Big Tech. The Symposium will discuss the benefit of decentralized and privacy preserving technologies as alternatives against the digital economy’s tendencies towards centralization and monopolization. After reviewing the most promising and impactful of such technologies on Day 1, the symposium will dedicate Day 2 to discussing how such projects could fit into the broader context of Europe’s efforts to protect fundamental rights of its citizens and restore its economic and technological sovereignty. The event will discuss issues that range from antitrust, competition law, the geopolitics of Finth, democratic control
over AI and platforms, and also how a Smart Green New Deal would look like today.
Amongst the main speakers of this year's symposium the writer Evgeny Morozov, former CTO of Barcelona and founder of the DECODE project Francesca Bria, Nesta CEO Geoff Mulgan, the author of best selling book Postcapitalism Paul Mason, the artist and founder of DIEM25 with Yanis Varoufakis Brian Eno, Ann Pettifor, the main economic advisor to the UK about party and author of The Green New Deal, Harvard Law Professor Roberto Unger; Jen Robinson the main lawyer of Julian Assange, Robert Kockett, the main advisor to Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez on the Green New Deal....
