Federico is an economist, with interdisciplinary research interests focused on the intersection between law, economics and technology. His research activity mainly concerns models of production and sharing of digital contents, with a focus on linked (open) data and administrative transparency. He also taught intellectual property and competition law at Bocconi University in Milan, and he lectured at the Politecnico di Torino and at the WIPO LL.M. in Intellectual Property. He has an undergraduate degree in Economics from Bocconi Univ. and a master’s degree in Economic theory and econometrics from the Univ. of Toulouse. He holds a Ph.D. in Institutions, Economics and Law from the Univ. of Turin and Ghent with a dissertation about software interoperability.
Federico joined the working group of the Nexa Center in 2006 at the beginning of its first year of formal activity. From Dec. 2012 to Apr. 2018, he led the Creative Commons Italy project and he was a member of the Open Team of Regione Piemonte that launched and steered the development of the first Italian open government data portal. From 2008 to 2012, in his position as the first Managing Director of the Center, he worked closely with the Directors to define staff and project goals and to coordinate the Center’s fellows. From 2013 to 2015 he served as Director of Research and Policy of the Nexa Center, focusing on the coordination of the cross-disciplinary research activities of the Center and on the related policy support actions.
At the end of 2015 Federico left the staff of the Center to become a co-founder and the CEO of Synapta, an innovative start-up specializing in linked data and the first spin-off of the Nexa Center. Synapta is also continuing the activities of ContrattiPubblici.org, a project initially incubated at the Center.
